The Scholarship Fund is hosting an essay competition in honor of the annual June National Caribbean American Heritage Month.
Submission Guidelines
Participants must be between 10 – 14 years and select one of the following topics to write an essay on.

- Address the prompt: “I am a leader who is assisting in bringing about racial harmony despite my country’s historical racial problems and the inadequacy of adults to solve the problem. I am holding businesses, community and political leaders accountable from all ethnic groups.
- If given the opportunity, what actions would you take to ensure hundreds of millions of US dollars from the oil and gas industry be redirected for a world-class education to bring about true prosperity in Guyana?
- Exploring Space and the its importance to a country’s development
- Write an essay on former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s leadership quote: “Great leaders never accept the world as it was and always work for the world as it should be.”
- Write an opinion on the extract from the paper “Why Better Governance Measures are Unlikely to Fix the Problem of Corruption” by Francis Fukuyama and Francesca Recanatini.
Each essay submitted must be between 600 – 800 words, typed and double-spaced in 11 or 12-point. Note for parents: Essays must be completely the work of the student. Students can discuss topic options with their parents, however, the construction and language of each essay must be entirely student’s work.

Judging
- Creativity and originality make up 30% of the essay score
- Essays will be judged on originality of thought, grammar, spelling, logic, clarity, writing style, and content.
- All decisions from the judges are final.
- Winners will be notified on July 15, 2022.
Entry in the contest constitutes permission for the Fund to publish the essay at its discretion. Full credit will always be given to the original author.
